Review

St James Church was packed for the concert on December 2nd 2009 featuring Part 1 of Bach’s "Christmas Oratorio" and Howard Goodall’s "Eternal Light". Sloist included Elizabeth Drury, Gordon Pike and Julian Rippon with Gwen Martin & Matthew Cann on the keyboards. This was a unique occasion when the choir was joined by the St. Sidwell School Childrens Choir. They joined in the singing of the two Chorales and also sang an African-American spiritual "Rise up Shepherds and follow" and they also led the adults in singing "Away in a Manger".

The Chairty supported was "Help for Heroes" which raised £280 on a retiring collection. The large audience appreciated the contrasting elements of the concert ; the grandeur of the Bach, the delightful singing of the young children (all under eleven) and the exciting modern work of Howard Goodall.

The next Concert will be St. Paul by Felix Mendelssohn which is another demanding work. The choir is going from strength to strength under its young and dynamic conductor, Laurence Blyth.
